The
Challenge
Client Background
KOBA is a visionary concept brand born from the legacy of Kobayashi Woven (小林商标), a multinational textile leader established in Kyoto in 1947. Deriving its name from "Kobayashi"—where "Koba" (小林) translates to "Small Forest"—the brand embraces its origins in the mountainous forests of Kyoto.
This intrinsic connection to nature drives KOBA's mission: to weave eco-sustainable solutions into the very fabric of the industry. By respecting its roots, KOBA embodies a deep reverence for the mountains and forests, affirming its drive for a greener future without compromising on quality.
Project Role
The challenge was to craft a sophisticated brand identity that transcends borders, positioning KOBA as the vanguard of premium eco-textiles. We needed to create a visual narrative that creates a seamless dialogue between the meticulous artistry of traditional Japanese craftsmanship and a forward-thinking commitment to environmental stewardship.
This required a delicate balance—avoiding the common tropes of generic "green" branding while ensuring the message of sustainability was unmistakable, premium, and deeply rooted in culture.
Heritage & Artistry
Drawing from over 75 years of expertise, the brand honors the meticulous attention to detail found in traditional Kyoto textile making. We highlighted this heritage by integrating subtle, nature-inspired motifs and a refined, minimalist aesthetic that speaks to the quiet dignity of Japanese design.
Sustainable Innovation
Beyond aesthetics, the brand identity signals a radical shift towards sustainability. We emphasized KOBA's dedication to the planet through a "forest-first" philosophy, showcasing how cutting-edge technology can coexist with nature to produce fabrics that are both luxurious and responsible.
The
Process
The strategy centered on the duality of "Craft and Future." The process began with extensive research into Japanese fabric and textile industries, traditional Japanese weaving motifs and the technical evolution of sustainable fabrics and fibers.
Discovery
This discovery phase informed a strategic positioning that defines KOBA as both a guardian of heritage and a pioneer of innovation. The team explored minimalist visual languages, natural color palettes, and tactile art direction to ensure the brand translates seamlessly into digital spaces.
Visual Mapping
This involved mapping out a visual system that could scale across diverse touchpoints—from high-end art direction to a refined UI/UX experience. This exercise allows the team to visually project the brand’s values and identity into different touchpoints across physical and digital spaces
